Cost of living in Barcelona. How much it cost?

Updated: Jul 25, 2023

Barcelona is a vibrant and exciting city, with a rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and a thriving food and arts scene. However, like many other major cities, it can be expensive to live in Barcelona, particularly in the city center. In this article, I will explore the cost of living in Barcelona and provide an overview of the expenses you can expect to encounter as I am originally from here + I am currently living here.

Housing

Barcelona's housing market is characterized by high demand and limited supply, resulting in soaring prices across the board. The cost of purchasing or renting a property in the city can be quite steep, especially in desirable neighborhoods like Eixample, Gràcia, or the Gothic Quarter. These areas offer a vibrant urban lifestyle with easy access to amenities, cultural attractions, and the beach, making them highly sought after by locals and foreigners alike.

Housing is one of the most significant expenses in Barcelona, particularly if you choose to live in the city center. Rent prices in central neighborhoods such as Eixample or Gracia can be quite high, with average prices ranging from €1,000 to €1,500 per month for a one-bedroom apartment. If you're willing to live outside the city center, prices can be much more reasonable, with rents averaging around €700-€900 per month for a one-bedroom apartment.

Transportation

Cost of living in Barcelona cannot be completed without the public transport. Public transportation in Barcelona is efficient and well-developed, making it an excellent choice for getting around the city. The backbone of the public transportation system is the Barcelona Metro, a network of subway lines that covers a significant portion of the city. The cost of a single journey within Zone 1, which includes most of the main tourist areas, is typically around €2.40. However, purchasing a T10 card, a multi-trip ticket valid for ten journeys, can offer savings and flexibility, costing around €11.35. This card can also be used for other modes of transportation like buses and trams.

Utilities

The cost of utilities in Barcelona generally includes electricity, water, heating, and internet services. The exact expenses can vary depending on factors such as the size of the apartment or house, location, and individual usage patterns. It's important to keep in mind that utility prices can fluctuate over time and may differ from one neighborhood to another.

Electricity costs in Barcelona are typically calculated based on the amount of kilowatt-hours consumed. The average monthly electricity bill for a small apartment can range from 50 to 80 euros, while larger residences may have bills that reach up to 150 euros or more.

Water expenses in Barcelona are usually determined by the amount of cubic meters consumed. On average, monthly water bills can range from 20 to 40 euros for a small apartment, while larger households may have bills closer to 60 euros.

Heating costs in Barcelona can vary depending on the heating method used. Many apartments have central heating systems, which are often more cost-effective than individual electric heaters. Monthly heating expenses for a small apartment can be around 70 to 100 euros during the colder months.

Internet services in Barcelona offer a range of options from various providers. The cost of internet packages can vary based on the speed and features included. On average, monthly internet bills can range from 30 to 50 euros.

Restaurants

Barcelona has an excellent food scene (here my favourite restaurants), with plenty of affordable options for eating out, particularly in the city's many tapas bars.

You can find restaurants to suit various budgets. There are high-end establishments that provide luxurious dining experiences with impeccable service and exquisite cuisine. These restaurants often feature Michelin-starred chefs and offer innovative tasting menus. The cost of dining at such establishments can be quite high, ranging from €100 to several hundred euros per person. Cost of living in Barcelona have to consider always eating properly in good restaurant :P

Mid-range restaurants in Barcelona offer a balance between quality and affordability. These establishments provide a diverse selection of cuisines, from traditional Catalan dishes to international flavors. Prices in mid-range restaurants typically range from €20 to €40 per person for a full meal, including starters, main course, and dessert.

For those on a tighter budget, there are numerous affordable options available in Barcelona. Local eateries, tapas bars, and small family-run restaurants offer delicious and authentic food at reasonable prices. In these establishments, you can enjoy a satisfying meal for around €10 to €20 per person.

Groceries

In Barcelona, the cost of groceries tends to be relatively affordable compared to other major European cities. Supermarkets like Mercadona, Carrefour, and Lidl are popular choices for everyday shopping, offering a wide range of products at competitive prices. These stores often provide a good selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, and pantry staples.

On average, a basic shopping list consisting of essentials like bread, milk, eggs, fruits, and vegetables could cost around €30 to €50 per week for an individual. However, this estimate may vary depending on personal preferences and dietary requirements.

Specialty items, imported goods, or organic produce may be priced higher than their conventional counterparts. Additionally, shopping at local markets like Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria or Mercat de Sant Antoni can offer a unique experience and the opportunity to find fresh produce, seafood, cured meats, and local delicacies. Prices at these markets might fluctuate depending on the season and demand.

It's worth noting that these figures are approximate and subject to change due to factors like inflation and market fluctuations. To get the most accurate and up-to-date information about grocery costs in Barcelona, it's recommended to check local stores or online grocery platforms for current prices and promotions.

However, by being savvy with your money and taking advantage of affordable options, it's possible to enjoy all that this incredible city has to offer without breaking the bank.
